Luigi Gandola

Luigi Gandola was born in Lecco on August 27, 1983, bringing joy
to his parents and, above all, to his sister, Simona, who hated being called “only child”.

In 1989 he starts going to school and does very well. After junior high school he attends the Scuola Alberghiera of Casargo, where he graduates in 1999 with the highest grades.

To enrich his knowledge and
gain more experience, he decides to complete his studies at the Istituto Alberghiero in Ponte di Legno Tonale in 2000.

To broaden his culinary knowledge and hone his skills even more, he works first as intern and then as chef at the Grand Hotel Villa D’Este in Cernobbio, a luxury five-star hotel, from 1998 to 2004. Under the guidance of chefs Parolari

and Bosetti and assisted by his father, Mino, Luigi’s expertise
grows steadily, always backed by his passion and creativity, which help him go to great lengths and overcome all the obstacles along the way. These actually forge his desire to constantly improve himself and strive for perfection.

His help becomes precious to his parents, who own the Salice Blu restaurant in Bellagio on Lake Como, where despite his young age

he starts renewing the restaurant’s traditional dishes, giving a new and creative twist to their presentation.

In 2005 he becomes the owner of the Salice Blu restaurant in Bellagio and, after restyling the place, he partly changes the structure, giving it a more sophisticated touch, while maintaining the courtesy, the warm environment, and the tradition and genuineness that had always been so important in the making of their dishes.

accident forces his father, Mino, to remain hospitalized. Luigi has to grow up fast – he becomes unusually mature for his age – and support his family in this time of grief.

But just like any twenty-year-old, Luigi has hobbies and interests apart from his job. In fact he loves gardening under the guidance of his mother, Flora, a real flower and plant connoisseur, who is always ready to share ideas and advice with her children. Besides this, Luigi loves to design, make, and restore old wooden objects and furniture, and, in Autumn, he goes for long walks in the woods of Bellagio to gather mushrooms. These habits have been passed on to him byhis father, who used to take him with him when Luigi was a child
to teach him things and share the things he loved most. His favorite sport is skiing and, even though the restaurant takes up much of his time, he always manages to take a few days off to keep in practice.

A LIFE OF

merit and satisfactions

This fills with pride his parents and sister, who will always support his decisions, help him reach higher goals, and encourage him on. His huge passion for dishes that are both good tasting and good looking, along with his ever increasing desire to learn and surpass himself, lead him to take part in national and international competitions where he receives very important acknowledgements. Among these, 34 gold medals and:
• Best Chef in Lombardia 2005
• Mediterranean Cuisine Champion 2004-2008
• Italian Prix Culinarie Taittinger Finalist 2006 – 2009
• Olympic Gold Medal in the Carving Cup Competition – Erfurt Germany 2004.
• Oro Olimpico Carving Cup Erfurt Germania 2004

Luigi’s hobbies? Spending time gardening and taking care of his flowers with some help from his mother, Flora, a real flower and plant connoisseur, who gives him excellent advice on how to take care of the garden. Luigi also loves to design, make, and restore old wooden objects and furniture, and, in Autumn, he goes for long walks in the woods of Bellagio to gather mushrooms. These habits have been passed on to him by his father, who used to take him along with him when Luigi was a child and teach many things that went beyond cooking. He shared all the things he loved with his son, and later they became dear to Luigi as well. His favorite sport is skiing and, even though the restaurant takes up much of his time, he always manages to take a few days off to keep in practice. Luigi also adores spending time with his nephews, Filippo and Luca, who are always following him everywhere he goes. They are his accomplices in his somewhat bizarre projects… which, however, always turn out to be quite useful and unique, like the wooden couch that can be admired within the restaurant’s garden!
